A cover band is a collective of talented session musicians that perform all the songs you love to sound just like the artist's original recording.
Most cover bands play an eclectic mix of favourites from across the decades and are able to recreate the style and sound of a number of your top performers and their all-time classic hits.
Some cover bands will perform the biggest hits of a particular decade - the 60s, 80s or 90s perhaps - and others might give the best contemporary songs a stylistic twist and play them all in a different style. Have you ever heard a rock 'n' roll version of Rihanna?!
Some cover bands choose to focus on one particular artist and recreate not only their sound but their repertoire, fashion and image too. These tribute bands are great for mega fans of particular artists.
On the whole, cover bands are able to replicate any song live, to sound just like the recording - you might even prefer the cover version! So if your budget doesn't stretch to Stevie Wonder, Adele or Oasis, a covers band is the perfect solution for your musical ideals!
Our cover bands perform at any event where musical entertainment is a must - so that's pretty much every event!
Whether you want to let your hair down with some pop, rock or indie favourites, show off your moves to one of our soul or Motown acts, sip champagne to a string quartet or mark a special occasion with a jazz group, brass band or tribute act - we've got you covered.
From Bar Mitzvahs, birthdays and retirement parties to weddings, Christmas events and New Year, our cover bands aim to give you an occasion to remember long after the music has stopped.
The cover bands listed here specialise in music that is suitable for partying and dancing in the evening - think dancefloor, lighting, good times and your best friend showing off their secret dance moves. If you want your event to have a bit of a different feel to it - in the afternoon or early evening perhaps - or you just want a different style of music, then
have a look at our acoustic background acts, or our collection of roving musicians – perfect for garden parties.
You might also find what you need on our wedding bands page.
Each of our cover bands publish a list of all the songs they play on their profile page and these tend to cover the very best pop, rock and soul tracks from across the decades.
From classics of previous eras by The Beatles and Aretha Franklin to current hits by Rihanna, Kings Of Leon and Bruno Mars, our cover bands love performing them all.
If you'd rather have a cover band that sticks to one particularly style, check out our soul and funk bands and swing bands or our tribute acts from the 60s, 70s and 80s.
Remember, larger line-ups are more likely to feature keyboards and brass, which lets the band cover a broader range of soul, pop and dance classics as well as pint-raising rock and indie favourites.
All our cover bands bring their own PA sound system, microphones, backline amplifiers and instruments - so they have everything they need.
If you're expecting more than 200 guests, its worth letting us know just so we can check that the band’s speaker system is large enough for your occasion.
Most cover bands will also bring lighting to your event as standard so that they can take your celebration to another level. Make sure you check their profile for extra details though as lots of our cover bands have even more epic add-ons to bring your occasion to life!
We want this to be as stress-free as possible for you so we've worked with our bands to make them as self-sufficient as possible. All you need to provide is access to a power source and a flat, sheltered performance space for the band to set up and play from! As a guide, it’s best to allow for 3m wide x 3m deep for a 3-piece band and then add an additional square metre for each extra band member.
Sometimes people like to put in a raised stage because it gives their band more impact when they perform but that isn't a requirement - as long as its flat and dry our bands will be able to put on a great performance.
If you're not sure if the band you want will work in your space, check out the 'performance information' on their profile page.
Cover bands ask for a 60-90 minute window from 5pm or 6pm at the earliest in order to set up and soundcheck their equipment.
It’s ideal if your venue is free of guests at this point, although some bands are happy to do a noiseless ‘line check’ to test instruments and equipment instead of a full, front-of-house soundcheck, if you need them to keep the volume down.
Most of our cover bands are booked for after-dinner dancing, and typically would perform 2 x 60 minute sets from 9.30pm through to midnight - with a half hour interval.
For performances later than midnight (whether band or DJ service), a later fee usually applies.
The talented musicians in your cover band need to keep their energy up all night so do make sure that they have the food and refreshments they need at the venue.
Access can sometimes be tricky for bands too so make sure you check if they need a reserved parking space or a secure changing room to leave their items during your celebration.
Any requirements should be detailed in your booking contract but do check the band's profile if you can't see them.
Its always worth booking a band from your local area to make sure you keep any travel and accommodation costs down to a minimum. We have cover bands across our roster that are based in most major towns and cities in the UK.
If you're keen for different styles of music throughout your day, make sure you check whether members of your evening entertainment band can provide an alternative style earlier in the day. A soul or pop covers band, for example, may have musicians that can provide a jazz or acoustic set in the afternoon.
Finally, if you haven't set a date for your event, its always worth considering a midweek or winter celebration as lots of our cover bands will offer competitive rates for bookings on those days.
Function Central is one of the leading providers of cover bands in the UK. Find and book a local band near you to save on travel and accommodation costs.
